CARBOHYDRATES

Carbohydrates are used for energy production and to build necessary cell components.
Five or six Carbons long formed into rings:
These can be linked together to form chains.
  • Disaccharides (two carbohydrates linked together; ie. sucrose)
Polysaccharides (long chains like starch or cellulose)
Starch and Cellulose only differ in how the carbohydrates are linked together:
  • Two slightly different types of bonds are used.
  • This makes them different enough that one you can easily digest while the other is not digested at all by humans.
Do you know which you can digest? (hint: cellulose is common in plants)
