Spectroscopy
IR Spectroscopy Tutorial: This section takes you through typical IR spectra of compounds with different functional groups to help you recognize distinctive, characteristic IR bands. The final section outlines how to analyze any IR spectrum. The Theory of NMR: This section explains the theory of NMR spectroscopy at a level appropriate for the sophomore organic chemistry student. Both proton and carbon NMR are covered.
IR/NMR Spectroscopy Problem Tutorial: This section takes you through the steps that you will need to do to solve for the structure of an organic compound given the IR, NMR, and molecular formula. Each common functional group is discussed in turn and many examples are presented.
New! Practice IR/NMR Spectroscopy Problems: The only way to get good at spectroscopy problems is to do a lot of them.
Mass Spectroscopy: Although this material is not currently covered by the organic labs, we have a tutorial available.
Spectroscopy Literature: These are some sources you can use to learn more about spectroscopy.
Published Chemical Data and Spectra:
- SDBS - Integrated Spectral Data Base System for Organic Compounds, from the National Institute of Advanced Industrial Science and Technology, Tsukuba, Ibaraki, Japan.
- NIST - mostly physical data, with some IR spectra.
- IR for Organic Chemists - list of web resources.
The IR and NMR spectra used for the spectroscopy problems and for the spectroscopy tutorial were taken with permission from the CD-ROM version of A Spectrum of Spectral Problems by Dr. Richard A. Tomasi, Sunbelt R&T, Inc.,1946 S. 74 E. Ave.,Tulsa, OK 741112-7716, phone 918-627-9655. We have used these great problems for many years in the spectroscopy section of the organic chemistry lab and lecture courses.
